Wedding bells in a Belgian prison

After a life-altering Prison SMART workshop, trials, tribulations and bombardment of affection, Marco gets married.
Love stories are always heart-warming to hear. Especially, when love comes your way when you least expect it and yet need it the most. Marco's is one such story, a story of finding love in the prison; of how Marco found the girl he married.

First few years in Prison
There was a time in his life when Marco was feeling depressed, aggressive and even suicidal because of the crime he had committed. The first few years in the prison were complete darkness, without a way back and without a way out. “As if my soul had been taken away,” he once said. Justified though, he believes, because he deserves punishment for the pain, sadness and loss that he had caused. Sorrow and repentance were tearing his heart. There was no help, only narcotics.

Transforming Experience
But he witnessed a transforming experience in his life – the entry of spirituality, yoga and meditation through the Prison Smart Program. In that one week he was a changed man. “I can’t possibly describe in a few words what I felt. Belongingness, tears of joy, love and happiness overwhelmed me! I wish what everyone wishes for – inner peace, strength, love, understanding and a future,” he shared in a letter to his Art of Living friends during Christmas.

Ashtavakra Gita

Hardcover: 318 pages
In 1991, in Bangalore, India, Sri Sri gave a series of commentaries on what he has himself described as "the most unique conversation that has taken place on this planet." Dating from the classical Vedanta period, Ashtavakra Gita is a profound enquiry into the nature of the Self and reality. The exchange between the enquirer, Janaka, and the sage, Ashtavakra, is remarkable in its maturity and scope, ranging from the conditions required for knowledge to be given, the nature of action and inaction, the behaviour of the mind and how it is influenced by the five elements, to the psychology of difficult emotions like fear and doubt. Previously available only as DVDs or CDs, Sri Sri has now instructed that this knowledge should be made available to everyone as a book.

Sri Sri’s commentary on one of the key Upanishads. An examination of what is the universe and its consciousness encompasses the vastness of creation, including such matters as the mind and its four inner functions; the five elements and the five senses; the nature of prana; the different layers of the subtle spirit world of angels. This is an inward journey and these are stopping points along the way to experiencing infinity. As Sri Sri observes, “The whole universe is permeated by spirit, by Brahman, yet to different degrees.”

Yoga At the Olympics: Welcome Move

Note: If you are not able to see the image below, you need to click on 'Display images' in your mail

Like any competitive sport such as gymnastics, yoga postures need grace, style, balance and flexibility. Yet yoga has something deeper to offer. To many it is a spiritual practice, a pathway to a more profound understanding of life.

Dinesh Kashikar, senior Sri Sri Yoga teacher, shares his views about entering yoga pose practice as a competitive sport in Olympics. He feels that this move will attract more people to take up yoga and reap the benefits of regular yoga practice.

Q: Will yoga lose its quality and essence if it is made a competition? Or will it become more popular and benefit many?

Yoga by nature is not a competition or a sport. Yet at the same time including yoga in Olympics will give a boost to the field of yoga.

Including yoga in the Olympics would definitely encourage many people to practice this philosophy.

More and more participation will give us yoga icons. For example, many people play cricket because they are inspired by their icons. Many people want their children to play cricket because they want to emulate cricket legends like Sachin Tendulkar. Similarly many people will want their children to take up yoga.

Yogathon this weekend raised £500 against human trafficking

Note: If you are not able to see the image below, you need to click on 'Display images' in your mail

A yogathon this weekend raised hundreds of pounds against human trafficking.

Camilla Leyland, a yoga instructor who lives in London Road, Harrow, held the one hour and 20-minute yogathon on Saturday, which raised £500 for Odanadi Seva, a charity which raises money to prevent women and children being sold into the worldwide sex trade.

The event, at the YMCA centre in Roxeth Hill, saw around ten people do the 108 yoga sun salutations. The 34-year-old, who has a four-year-old daughter, Inaya, said she was thrilled because she only expected to raise £150.

She said: “With almost £500 raised we are doing great work and hope to repeat it next year on an even bigger and better scale. Many who turned up were expecting to do just a quarter or half of the 108 sun salutations, but we did them all and the sun came out as we did them.”

‘A powerful life-skills program’: TUDELTA

Note: If you are not able to see the image below, you need to click on 'Display images' in your mail

A new program, called Yes+, offers student the support they need to combat study-related stress and lead ‘calm yet vibrant lifestyles’.

A recent survey conducted by various Dutch university newspapers revealed that TU Delft students are the most stressed-out students in the country. Looking at the kind of positive feedback the results of this survey received on the various social networking sites, it is quite evident that students are eager to find measures that would help them relieve stress and lead more productive lives.
In the subsequent search for solutions, it emerged that there are already quite a few programs and seminars organized within universities and by other organizations, aimed at helping students overcome stress. One of most intriguing of these is the Yes+ program, which is a 1 or 2 credit course taught in some of the major universities around the world, and which will now be offered to TU Delft students.
“Yes+ empowers students with teaching tools that eliminate stress, get rid of negative emotions from the system, develops strong social and leadership skills, increases focus and concentration, better time management skills and also incubates projects for community service,” says Aditya Kamalapurkar, an MSc Management Technology student who has been closely associated with the popular NGO –‘Art of Living’, and is in charge of organizing the YES+ course. “It empowers the youth to reach their highest potential.”
In fact universities like Harvard and Cornell have produced many favorable scientific reports about practices followed in this program. “Yes+ is a powerful life-skills program that charges the youth with a fresh breath of vigor, enthusiasm, excellence and responsibility,” Kamalapurkar continues. “Yes+ enables you to absorb the freshness, repose and all the positivity around you, helping you discharge stress, inhibitions, negative tendencies/habits, and barriers. It’s a brilliant mix of antiquity and the contemporary, a smooth blend of ancient wisdom, yoga, pranayama (breath control), and meditation, fused with contemporary intellectual exchanges, music and games.”
The Yes+ program by itself is not just about decreasing stress and anxiety, but it also helps strengthen leadership skills, enhance memory and concentration powers and, most importantly, teaches participants to lead a calm yet vibrant lifestyle. At universities across the globe, where it’s now recognized that it’s not just academics but the all-round development of a student which is important, the Yes+ program is offered as a credit course that students can do as a part of their academic program.
“In Europe, our volunteers conducted the Corporate Culture & Spirituality World Youth Forum, which was an extraordinary experience for 50 selected young professionals and university students,” Kamalapurkar says of some other activities conducted by the organization. “The World Youth Forum 2009 provided an open platform for participants (aged 18-35) to voice their messages to the world’s top economic and political decision-makers. Moreover, in the United States, our team did a project called ‘Deepening Roots’, an intensive multi-disciplinary summer internship that focused on community-oriented sustainable agriculture, together with leadership development, meditation and nutrition. The mission is to cultivate youthful leaders who could implement practical solutions, build communities, and inspire their generation towards a sustainable future.”
Further, ‘Insignia’ was a one-of-a-kind fundraising event organized by the Yes+ chapter in Kolkata, India. This event saw the volunteers channel their creative energy and come up with an evening of fun and laughter, including two plays, a dance performance and a game, with the funds raised by the event being used for slum development projects and environmental drives.
The Yes+ organization also has activities all across the Netherlands, in Amsterdam, Harlem, Den Haag, Delft, Rotterdam, and elsewhere. Moreover, a workshop was held at TU Delft last February, which had 33 participants of eight different nationalities. Given the positive feedback on this event, Yes+ is now hosting another workshop at the Lijm & Cultuur Center in Delft, from April 26-29, which is open to all interested TU students.

Everyone has experienced a meditative state in moments of deep joy, or when completely engrossed in an activity, when just for a moment the mind becomes so light and at ease. While we have such moments, we are unable to repeat them at will. The Sahaj Samadhi course teaches you how.It is a meditation technique that is designed to self-heal and improve the general body health and mind state. This meditation technique almost instantly alleviates the practitioner from stress-related problems.

Sahaj is a Sanskrit word that means natural or effortless. Samadhi is a deep, blissful, meditative state. Sahaj Samadhi meditation is a natural, effortless system of meditation.

Regular practice of the technique can totally transform the quality of one’s life, by culturing the system to maintain the peace, energy, and expanded awareness of meditation throughout the day. These meditation techniques combined with yogic practices can ensure good health and a calm mind.

* Meditation allows the conscious mind to settle deeply in the Self, giving it rest
* When the mind settles down, it lets go of all tension, making one healthy and focused

How does Sahaj Samadhi meditation work?
The participant is given a mantra which allows the experience of meditation to be deeper. When the mind and nervous system are allowed to repose a few moments in profound silence, the blocks that suffocate our progress gradually dissolve.

Why should we repose in the Self? How is this going to help in our day-to-day life?
When a river is calm, its reflection is clearer. When the mind is calm, there is greater clarity in the field of expression. Our powers of observation, perception and expression improve. As a result we are able to communicate effectively and clearly.

Why do I need a mantra?
In Sanskrit, a mantra is described as, “Manana trayate iti mantra.”. Iti Mantra is that which saves you from repetitiveness. A repetitive thought is a worry. Mantras help to free you from worries.
